Luxurious Stone Tops For Your Kitchen Island

Whether you're after a storage workhorse or a uniquely design kitchen island, we've got them all.

If kitchen is the heart of a home, a kitchen island is the heart of the kitchen. It is the social hub of the kitchen where everyone gather. Because of how central a kitchen island is, let's take a look at what make a great kitchen island.

Kitchen Island Size
How big or small your kitchen island should be depends on a number of factors. One is the size of your kitchen. If you have a large kitchen, you have the flexibility to have different designs and sizes. On the other hand, the kitchen island will need to be compact if kitchen space is limited.
No matter the amount of space you have, it's all talking and communicating with your cabinet maker and carefully plan everything to get the right size for your kitchen island.

Functionality
Apart from your kitchen space, you'll also need to consider how many members of your family, or number of guests you'd like to entertain around your kitchen island. For an island designed to serve breakfast, how many stools should there be?
It's also important to consider how everyone moves around your kitchen. Will the kitchen island block access to other important kitchen facilities such as the pantry or the fridge?
Generally we recommend a clearance space around 900mm or 3 feet all around the kitchen island. This is not just about keeping your kitchen functional but more importantly about yours and your family safe. You should make sure the oven or stove is far enough and that all doors can open safely.

Storage
A kitchen island not only adds style to your kitchen but can also be a great storage workhorse. There are several storage components you can add, from standard cabinets to drawers to open shelves. To maximise the storage capability of your kitchen island, try to add different storage components. You can build in some drawers, cabinet for a trash bin, open shelves for linens, untensils or other small items.

Kitchen Island Top
Here's another important consideration. What you'll choose depends on a number of factors, including the style of your kitchen and your budget. Some home owners have one type for all kitchen tops. Others have a different top for the island. This brings a bit of contrast to your overall kitchen. For example, you can have stone benchtops but polished timber top for your island to add some warmth to the kitchen.
